My doctor suggested Valerian Root when I was dealing with post-partum depression. It does take the edge off of stress without that drugged feel.
I also use it as a gentle relaxant when I have insomnia. It's rather pricey and sometimes hard to find, but it has been worth it for me. It is more effective than St. John's Wort.
Other than the fact that it stinks like mold, I know of no side effects.
References :
kava Kava is the best i have tried. it is no more dangerous than prescription pills and a lot less harmful and addictive in my opinion .
the reason there are so many negative studies done on it is because the pharmaceutical companies cant patent it ( as it is natural) and therefore lose out on the sale of their chemical help to natural help) this is why thay have produced so many reports biased against herbal and complimentary meds.

always check where the reseacrh you are reading came from
most research of this sort is paid for by bif pharma companies and med professionals , and results are hand picked and manipulated to show what they want then to show.
References :
ME LIKE LSD. IT GIVE YOU HIGHS.

But seriously, Look into Velerian. Can't recommend it personally, but it seems to be a useful and effective sedative. With regards to St. John's Wort - good if you're sad, but there's no evidence to support it being effective for anxiety.

Exercise, finding purpose in life, and fruits and a healthy diet help - in more severe cases of trauma and real distress consider an antidepressent, or intense meditation and such. Or a mix. Lexapro is good, my sister started and it has worked wonders on her.
References :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerian_(herb)
