Xanax works pretty well. There is even a time released kind now.
Anti depressants have side effects, but everything does.
You could spend years in therapy and never get better, or pop a pill and whaa laaa!
Better living through chemistry!

Have you been a victim of a crime? Post traumatic stress can knock a person on their BUTT!
Try NON medicine ways first for your angst., your age tells me you should not take anti depressants. Some meds make YOU worse. Anti Anxiety drugs make you have medicine head and make you feel like you are sleepy. Try focusing on the REASON you have this phobia, Identify what scares you , then find a way to correct the problem. Say a prayer each morning for guidance in your deeds and actions.

I had the problem in school and started working out, not to be tough but just to get in shape. Suddenly I became admired and wanted. People became attracted to my whatever. It worked somehow. I now believe I gave off more self confidence as I got in better shape. Good luck, and God Bless.

Phobias are illnesses. Please do not try to treat your situation lightly. Call your M.D. or go see him. Ask HIM/HER the very same question as you have posted here. The hardest step is the first one. Make the call. You’ll be all right. You didn’t get this "illness" in a day or a week and it will take some time to work through it. Log off that computer friend and call the doc. I wish you the best.

There could be a deeper issue going on here that may need addressing. Perhaps it’s a self esteem issue or you may be suffering from anxiety or depression (these are often interconnected). In any of these cases talking to someone, anyone, is the best place to start. A friend or family member if that’s appropriate. Also your local GP could put you in touch with a social worker or similar.
From there, the social worker &/or doctor can decide (and discuss with you) on the best course of action or treatment. And that may not mean going on medication. If it does there are so many different types of medication (antidepressants, anti anxiety drugs and sub categories within them etc.) that your doctor will decide what’s best for you based on your personality and your needs. It would be inappropriate for anyone to suggest a particular drug for you in this forum.
If medication is the way to go then discuss different options with your doctor (as they are the only ones who can prescribe it to you anyway) and do your own research on the different types of medication for your condition if you want.
If you’re uncomfortable discussing this with your family, friends or doctor there are anonymous help lines available that you could call and a trained operator will talk you through your options.
One thing I would say is that medication for these types of problems doesn’t fix the underlying issue as to why you feel this way in the first place (unless it’s a chemical imbalance such as in bipolar disorder). Medication helps bring you to a stronger state of mind where you are in a better position to address the underlying factors that have made you feel this way.
Help is out there, you just need to take that first step. If you can do that you will be on your way to a better life.

There is a new drug out now called Cymbalta and tests do show much greater improvement over anxiety and social phobia. It is regarded as an anti-depressant but it has a small amount of a mood elevator component too. Ask your regular MD if he will give you some free samples to try and give them at least a week to work. (Some people find relief within a few days.)
