how effective is exposure therapy in treating social anxiety disorder?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

It is the probably the MOST effective treatment there is for SAD, because you are working on both the negative thinking that causes anxiety, while at the same time GRADUALLY learning how to behave in anxiety provoking situations.

The trick is though…BABY STEPS. Don’t bite off more than you can handle at first exposure, or you will want to quit.. As you obtain small success, you "climb up the ladder" toward activities that you once thought impossible to do.

You can do it! Good luck…

Widely used workbook, read this before therapy if you can:

what is the best medication for treating anxiety disorders, not depression?

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

It really depends on your individual situation. Sure benzos can be effective for some with anxiety, but sometimes something else works better. That is why you need to see a psychiatrist. They can talk to you about the type of anxiety you experience, where the sources of your anxiety lie, what you are going through, etc., and prescribe the most appropriate medication for you.

Also psychotherapy can be as effective as meds in some people.

Who has used St. John Wort for treating anxiety or depression?

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Can you use it along with an anti-depressant? Has anyone replaced using an anti-depressant with St. John’s Wort?

You must tell your doctor if you are taking it and they want to put you on an antidepressant.
Its not advisable to be on an antidepressant and st john wort.
St Johns wort is only advisable for minor depression. If you are very depressed you should see a doctor.
Also it interferes with the contraceptive pill so should not be taken if you are taking the pill for contraception use.

Well, does anyone have anything good to say about celexa, treating anxiety?

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

more often than not people talk about the bad vs. the good. a few months ago I was prescribed paxil by my doctor. So there I went on a search mission to find all the info I could about it. It sounded awful. Yes I understand everyone is different and you really don’t know what it will do until you try it yourself. between all the side effects of Paxil this drug did not sound worth it. So I made an appt. with a psychiatrist instead of my regular physician. She told me she would have never prescribed paxil to me, but that celexa was also generalized anxiety and has less side effects. Also suppose to be weight neutral. no gain no loss. It might make you more hungry but it doesn’t trigger your brain to store fat as paxil does. It will probably take me a week to trust that this med. might help. I haven’t picked up the prescription yet. They say to stay off the computer because other peoples stories will drive you nuts, but I can’t help it. Any stories bad or hopefully good will help

I’ve been taking Celexa, and now Lexapro (An "updated" version) for about 4-5 years now and it seems to work fine. Supposedly Lexapro has fewer side effects than Celexa, so ask your Doc about it. I can’t say I notice much of a difference when I’m on it, but I do notice myself getting worse if I miss doses for a while. It’s hard to tell b/c as you know it’s different for everyone. But overall, I think that both meds are widely accepted and used. If you want more info, just google it and see. There are many different websites that give you neutral info (or both good AND bad) so that you can make your own conclusion. But either way, you’re just gonna have to see which med works best for YOU! (And try not to feel too much like a guinea pig while you do! Trust me, I know the feeling.) GOOD LUCK!

Is cognitive behavioural therapy effective in treating depression, anxiety etc?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Or is it too intellectually focused? I mean is it psychologys equivalent of a band aid…….youd only use it for minor stuff?

it depends on the person… try it for a few months and see if it is for you. it forces you to confront your negative beliefs about yourself and does work for many people. it’s based on solid theory from cognitive psychology about how the mind changes its core beliefs… and of course decades of clinical practice. however, it is not for everyone… but yes it treats depression and anxiety…anything that you have because of underlying negative thoughts about yourself.

Reiki and self-treating anxiety?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I have always been told I have a natural ability for healing touch. Anyway, I am taking my first Reiki class in a couple weeks and I was wondering something. I have a severe anxiety disorder. Does anyone have any experience with Reiki and self-treating anxiety? Has anyone been helped by that?

Reiki can help with treating anxiety. When you feel anxiety give yourself Reiki.

I have used self-treatment sessions anytime I have an anxiety or panic attack and it does help. The more I give myself self-treatments, the less I have my anxiety or panic attacks. So I would recommend a daily dose of Reiki. I have had to do this even while driving as I get anxiety attacks when I drive.

Have you had luck treating depression and/or anxiety with the herb Rhodiola?

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Please don’t send me answers with lectures on different treatment routes or give me opinions on ‘natural’ therapy versus medical treatment. I have tried a gamut of medications and therapy, but I have severe anxiety and treatment resistant depression. Rhodiola sounds like it may be promising and I would just like to know what kind of luck anyone has had. If there are any ND’s out there who have patients that had some success with it, that would be great to know, too. Thank you!

I’m on more than just Rhodiola – also on Phosphatidylserine and Taurine – but I have definitely noticed significant effects. I haven’t had much trouble with anxiety, nor panic attacks, since I’ve been on the combo. It helps me to sleep at night, too.

I’m working with my ND physician to target specifically what my brain needs, which I would recommend… But the Rhodiola’s been working great for me.

I am asking about Gaba for treating anxiety and stress?

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Hi, What is the longest period I can take the gaba without side effects or impact on the hormones body, and particularly growth hormone

Where did you hear that it would affect your growth hormone?
Gaba is perfectly safe to take every day for the rest of your life… in fact, it’s a naturally occurring Amino Acid that is already in your brain (it functions as a neurotransmitter).

If you are taking any drugs, you can ask a pharmacist or doctor if it would be safe to take Gaba with them, but drug interaction would be the only potential problem.
