Is Vistaril truly as effective in treating anxiety as a Benzodiazepine without the horrible side effects?

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

You have to try it because everyone reacts to medications in different ways. I would try it because it’s not addictive like the other benzos like Xanax and Klonopin etc.

How effective is Kava Kava in treating anxiety and depression?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

I was reading the information below that I found on the following website: http://www.gslsupplements.com And I was wondering how effective can this herb be in treating anxiety as well as depression. I thought that Kava Kava was only given for anxiety. I didn’t know people also take it for depression. Anyways, I just would like to know how well it works.
Thanks!

"Premium GSL ® Kava Kava is made from whole kava roots to produce the highest quality product. Kava is an all-natural, mild sedative that relaxes the body without harmful side effects. The active compound “kavalactones” acts as a muscle relaxant and sleep aid. It also helps to reduce anxiety, restlessness, and stress. It has become a popular botanical because it also works on the central nervous system and promotes relaxation to those suffering from anxiety or depression."

Does anyone know of any herbs to treat anxiety?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I was told that Kava Kava is good for treating anxiety but upon further research i found it to be very dangerous. does anyone know of any others that could help?

My doctor suggested Valerian Root when I was dealing with post-partum depression. It does take the edge off of stress without that drugged feel.

I also use it as a gentle relaxant when I have insomnia. It’s rather pricey and sometimes hard to find, but it has been worth it for me. It is more effective than St. John’s Wort.
Other than the fact that it stinks like mold, I know of no side effects.

Is Lexapro effective in treating Social Anxiety Disorder and/or PMDD?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

I know Lexapro isn’t FDA approved to treat SAD (social anxiety disorder) or PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), but I’ve been recently prescribed this.

Any SSRI would help wouldn’t it?

Has anyone tried Lexapro and has had their social phobia or PMDD symptoms relieved from it?

I tried Zoloft (which is FDA approved to treat SAD and PMDD), but 50mg didn’t do much, and 100mg wouldnt let me sleep more than 2 hours a night for 2 weeks…

I’ve done some research and have come across Paxil also. How well does it work for one with SAD or PMDD? Personal experiences only please.

YES! It’s very effective fr SAD. My son has been on 10 mg per day for 30 days and he is so much better than he has ever been before! He is dating again!!!

Treating Anxiety/depression and drug addiction?

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

My fiancé is having multiple problems at once and Im not sure where to start getting him help. He has a drug problem & it started about 3 yrs ago. When asked why he uses he basically says it because he has bad anxiety and doesnt know how to deal with it (this wasnt figured out until after he was using for awhile & became addicted). He wants to stop using and stop feeling so crappy but we are not sure where to strat. He uses because of his anxiety but the drugs are just making the anxiety worse. We tried going to his primary doctor & he basically said that he doesnt treat that, go see a therapist. We tried outpatient theraphy but he hated it and said it made him feel worse. Our latest step is to go see a theraphist ( appt. on monday). My question is are these the right steps or is there something else that we should be doing? Im at my wits end with it all the drugs but I do not want to lose him. I love him very much and want us to be happy like I know we were and can be.
I’ve been with him 10yrs and we have a child together. I’m never going to give up on him, even if we do need to split. I love and care for him and his safety too much. I know there is a long and hard road ahead and I’m willing to deal with that because I know that deep down what a good man/father he is. That loving/caring person comes out every once and a while. He just has a problem that we don’t know how to fix or where to even start. Are we going in the right direction? Or should we be doing something else?

OK, now what you have described is a very complex situation and needs hands-on evaluation by a therapist.

Before I go any further I want to tell you that I do not think you should marry this person unless he can get clean and stay clean for a very long time.

Your fiance has what is called in addiction medicine a "dual diagnosis". Both issues must be addressed.

Recovery from addiction is not easy, involves a very high rate of relapse and/or death. It involves lifelong recovery activity including 12 step programs and complete abstinence from any addicting drug or alcohol.

Marry this guy, and you are going to live in the utter hell of codependency for the duration of your marriage.

How you treat anxiety in a puppy?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Someone suggested prozac and I’m wondering if it will work for my dog. I have a 4 1/2 month old German shepherd puppy in puppy classes right now. He can’t be calmed down when I take him to new places, especially around other dogs. He’s constantly on the end of his leash whining and barking trying to get at other dogs. His favorite treats won’t even get his attention. He seems scared sometimes too. He backed himself in a corner once while barking at a dog and layed there looking freaked out. Then looked scared when I tried to console him. The puppy class teacher says he has anxiety issues and that from what she’s seen they’re very common in German shepherds in my area, probably due to poor breeding. We’ve been going to class and trying to get him out around other dogs as much as possible for 2 months now and he’s not improving. I wear him out with walks and fetch before we take him out but he’s still wild when we arrive at PetSmart

Part of the problem is that your classes are at Pet Smart. I went through the same thing. There are too many distractions there for the dogs to feel comfortable (especially one that may have some anxieties – which yours may or may not have). Don’t let what the PetSmart people have told you to cloud your judgement – the PUPPY just wants to get out there & play – to hell with the other stuff !!

Find a private dog training facility & talk to the trainer regarding the issues your dog has & make sure he/she feels comfortable dealing with them. It sounds like your dog just needs a more relaxed atmosphere to learn. All puppies are freaky like that between 3 – 12 months. He’s excited and scared at the same time & would rather play then learn. That’s why puppy classes are so important. It teaches your dog that it’s okay to play but then there’s a time to learn some basic rules.

I think your dog is fine … after all he’s still a baby.

Why does ECT not treat generalized anxiety if it’s caused by shortage of the same brain chemical as depression?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

. . . (serotonin in-between the cell receptors), and many depression treatments (Zoloft, for example) treat both depression and anxiety, just at different dose levels (2X – 3X higher for treating anxieties)?

In other words, why doesn’t this seemingly simple analogy hold?

A different type of receptors for anxiety vs. those for depression?

Saying a particular receptor causes depression or anxiety is quite a crude generalisation.

They only help in one way. Like if you are cold and you put on a hat, the hat HELPS, but it isn’t going to take the place of the coat, gloves a scarf now is it? Also, just because affecting certain receptors helps doesn’t mean that those receptors are even the cause of the disease itself.

In my opinion, ECT is a very crude and barbaric treatment that is only allowed because as a society we think less of mental patients.

how effective is exposure therapy in treating social anxiety?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Sigh since no one answered I might as well. I have read about this and yes it does work, and it is one of the major steps in recovering from social anxiety. However you have to do this with a therapist, or good guidance. If you do this by yourself and you have social anxiety, you will most likely fail. If you fail it will only serve to affirm your social anxiety beliefs.
