What is the difference between Asperger’s Syndrome and social phobia?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I have a lot of friends, but I sometimes feel lost and awkward in social situations when I am around people I have never seen before. If I have gotten used to being around certain people, I find that it is somewhat easy to socialize with them, however.

I am very introverted and I prefer to spend my time alone, but I am not exactly a loner.
I almost feel like I should never get married or have kids, because I don’t want to pass on a possible case of autism to my kids.

The short answer is that people with social phobias know how to socialize but get freaked out in social situations.

With Aspergers it is more ‘mind blindness’, where the individuals, are a lot of times incapable of carrying on conversations or engaging in casual small talk, or can’t comprehend even the most subtlest social cues.

How did YOU get Social Phobia / Anxiety?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Dear all,

I have had it for 12 years and I am curious about how it started in all of us, so if you have/had social phobia/anxiety could you please just answer these questions.

1. Did you have a overly critical parent/emotionally manipulative member of the family when you were growing up?

2. Were you bullied by someone?

3. Do you think it came from being judged negatively when you were younger?

4. Were you "put down" made to feel inferior by any defining situation of person?

Any other reasons why you believe you may now have this?

yeah well I was always shy and coupled with insensitive "friends" and inconsistent parents, its not surprising I grew up with an aversion to people. I think some people have a natural vulnerability to stuff like personality disorders and unless they have a really terrific environment growing up (almost no one does) they’re gonna get screwed.

Do you know anyone who successfully overcome social phobia?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

i’ve read alot stories of ppl who have social phobia for 20,30,40 years…and i’ve NEVER heard of anyone who actually overcome it :S i need to know there are sumone who has done it!!!
i am a social phobia myself so that would be an inspiring story for me.

The underlying issue of social phobia is simply, shyness. Some people are born extroverts and some people are by nature itself, born introverts. Being an introvert is no more unacceptable than being an extrovert and in fact you must have one to have the other. We can’t all be social butterflies.
So if you have been shy for a great deal of your life and have been very introverted, you will never be a true extrovert, because it just is not in your nature.
Having said that you may improve your social skills somewhat as you become more aware of your strengths and weaknesses but this can only be done by interacting with people.

I know that you have heard it before, and you probably cringe every time you hear it, as I used to, but the only way to counteract the problem is to face your fears and go out there in the world, and interact. If you hide in your shell any longer, the problem will get worse. I am not saying that you should try and become a party animal, just try small baby steps. Try catching a bus during a weekday. Try walking in a crowded shopping center while going through coping strategies in your head. Look at other people (not obviously) and mimic their behaviour, while learning from it.
The more you come out of your little nest, the more confident you will become.

Is zoloft the best medication to treat social phobia?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

I have ocd and social phobia so my psychiatrist prescibes me zoloft. it is supposed to treat mulitple mental disorders, but I really don’t care much for my ocd I can deal with the srtuggles that come with that. What I can not handle anymore are the problems that come with my social phobia. I can not keep a job or stay in school because of this disorder. I need to know what is the best treatment for social phobia?

i take zoloft for social phobia and ocd. social phobia has been with me since i was a kid, but was severely aggravated by becoming addicted to meth. (i’ve been clean for about three years now)

at one stage, it got so bad that i literally living in one room of my house. going outside was out of the question. i couldn’t or even look out the window or answer the door and was spending most of my time sleeping underneath my bed.

combining the zoloft with cognitive behavioural therapy has helped a lot.

because the aggorophobia/social phobia it took a very long time to even get to the doctor as the doctors surgery was not a ’safe’ place for me.

after trying a few different anti-depressants, zoloft was the one for me. the anxiety has gone. cognitive therapy helped me to recognise what my ‘triggers’ were and gave me useful strategies to help myself.

give it a go – but try with some cognitive therapy.

Is there any hope for a person with extreem social phobia?

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

I’ve been extreemly social phobic all my life. I grew up on a farm and my parents were never around. I had no friends. I never really learned any social skills. I think becouse of my childhood I developed borderline personality disorder. I know that cogniative behavioral therapy is the way to really get over social phobia but I have a very boreing personality. Its impossable for me to think of ANYTHING to say to anybody. In the past I self medicated with weed, pills, meth, crack, anything to escape from myself. So now I feel like a burnout and I’m sure other people notice it as well. I’m on medication but it doesn’t seem to help. There is no pill to help you carry on a interesting conversation. Seems like everything I’ve done has been counter productive. I tell lies to try to hide the fact that I’m all alone and very lonely. For some reason I have a fear of going to sleep and then one I fall asleep all I wanna do is sleep and never get up. I have nowhere to go or anybody to care if I left

I care about you friend!! Your not the only one suffering!! Many people feel like you as i once did! Im in your corner!!Feel free to email me! I wont give it here, but let me know and i will exchange emails!! I wanna help!!

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

I been suffering from social phobia since the age of 15, I am 26 now I know that is not possible for me to live what they call a normal live, I will like to apply for disability but I do not know where to start, I have been seening a counselor and doctor for this matter for about 6 month now.
any comment will be gratly appreciated.
thank you

Talk to your counselor and psychiatrist. You will need your psychiatrist to write supporting justification so s/he should have an idea how the process works. Other than that, you can contact your local social security department or social services agency. (Not sure what these local depts are called in NJ but they are county services in CA.)

what is best ever medicen for social phobia ?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

i suffer from sever case of social phobia that hardly i get out of my house cause i don’t feel relaxed around people and i feel people staring at me .

social phobia is best treated with a drug called zoloft, u have to get a prescription to buy it but maybe not if u buy online, however, if u prefer natural options, a natural product, an amino acid called 5 htp is clinically proven to help those with anxiety disorders, panic, phobias, etc. i would say this is a safer alternative, and much cheaper too, u can easily buy it online as many online store sell it, im not sure if it is ok to mention brand names here, but if u r internested u can send me a message so that i can recommend the brand i use

How to overcome social phobia?

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Do anyone in here knows how to overcome a social phobia and also being paranoid? What should do and how often?
Does taking drugs will going to take effect on that?
thank you?

Unless the cause of the phobia is physiological do not take any drugs, it will probably just make you psychologically dependant on that drug.

I would suggest starting with identifying the cause of the phobia.
