Do medications for anxiety disorders help with blushing?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

i have really bad anxiety and i blush really easily and frequently. do u think this would help with it?

Yes!!!

I had really bad anxiety and got put on Paxil, and within a few months I hardly ever blushed, and now that its been a year since i’ve been on it, I almost NEVER blush. No matter what. I used to blush for other people, at least a few times a day, and stay flushed for like an hour after I was embarrassed.

20mg of Paxil and life has much less stress, I can talk in front of a class and raise my hand, and not throw up before presentations. It’s great =]

I went to therapy as well though, so I recommend that to help you as you take medication.

Don’t listen to people who say they don’t effect each other because they do. The pill doesn’t directly treat blushing, but by treating anxiety it reduces blushing because you aren’t as self conscious and nervous all the time.

Is zoloft better than prozac for anxiety disorders?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I have ocd. I’ve been on prozac for almost 5 months. It hasn’t really helped much, only a little. Do you think it would be better to switch to zoloft (sertraline) for my anxiety?

In scientific studies, all SSRI’s are almost identical when it comes to effectiveness over all. Some people do tend to respond better to one SSRI compared to another. Also, initially people thought clomipramine (and older medication – a tricyclic) was more effective than SSRI’s, but they probably show similar efficacy and SSRI’s have far less bothersome side effects.

Be aware that usually higher doses of the SSRI’s are needed to treat OCD symptoms compared to the dosages used to treat depression. Often people will need to take 60mg / day of prozac to get improvement for their OCD. If you are tolerating it without significant side effects, you should talk to your doctor about increasing the dose.

If you have a good psychiatrist, he/she should be able to help you with th decision of changing the dose or changing medications.

Is Abilify appropriate for anxiety disorders?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

My nurse practitioner put my on Abilify. I have generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and moderate obsessive compulsive disorder.

It wouldn’t be my first choice. Most psychiatrists that I consult with (I’m a therapist) tend to use celexa as a first-line treatment for anxiety related disorders. Usually, they will prescribe this in conjunction with an anti-anxiety for panic/situationally bound anxiety as a PRN (or taken as needed). Hope this helps.

Is it true that if you suffer from Depression/Anxiety Disorders it can disqualify you from Graduate School?

Is it true that if you suffer from Depression/Anxiety Disorders it can disqualify you from Graduate School?

I used to have bad anxiety and what your experiencing at the current moment, so I know what you a going through. I looked everywhere for a solution and I find one that the first time I tried I started to cry as it worked so well and I keep doing it whenever I get a anxiety attack, which has reduced by 95% because of this technique. So I want to try to help a few people overcome this. I want you to try this and email me back of how it went.

Next time your in a situation that your having a anxiety or panic attack I want you to stay where you are and observe what you are feeling, then I want you to speak to your anxiety in your mind and tell it to give you the worst anxiety attack it can give you, now your anxiety will reach a new peak but keep telling it to give you more and more and more, while staying where you are (stay no matter what because its only sensations within the body) and then at the peak of the anxiety attack it will pop like a baloon and the symtons will come down, because asnxiety has a peak. The reason you get anxiety is because you are dreading having one in the near future (leaving that place where you are while getting worse is a wrong thing to do as you are leaving while its in a upward trend with the feeling), therefore have that lingering feeling. When you REALISE that anxiety has a peak then starts to come down, you know that nothing happened to you exept sensations within the body.

Then you tell your anxiety that when it wants it can come back and you will be here, meaning you are not fearing it. The reason it comes back is because of the fear of having one. This is a POWERFUL succesfull thing which has changed my life and has reduced my anxiety by 95%. Let me know how you went.

Should we change our strategy for treating patients with Anxiety disorders ?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Most of the times a patient having anxiety disorder is prescribed a SSRI. I think ideally treatment should consist of counseling , CBT , taking patients relatives in confidence and training patient about meditation and relaxation. Also adding Benzos like valium or klonopin can help immensely. I feel there is unnecessary bias against use of Benzos, they work extremely well without major side effect on short term basis, although there is possibility of addition , habituation and tolerance. What are views of experts and patients ?

SSRIs and SNRIs have shown that they are the most effective for treatment of anxiety and depression. I have had very bad reactions to both of those classes and my psychiatrist recommended to not take them again. I take a benzodiazaprine as needed. Luckily, my PTSD symptoms only come up for a month or two out of the year. It would be difficult to live like that all the time.

The problem with benzodiazaprines is that they are less effective if taken routinely. They are even less effective if taken for a long period of time. Personally, I find them to be helpful for a week or two and then not helpful. My psychiatrist recommended that I start therapy and I already had before I went to see him. He asks me every time I see him if I am still in talk therapy. My therapist teaches self-relaxation techniques.

Depending on the anxiety disorder, most of getting help is learning a certain level of tolerance and coping skills for dealing with the symptoms. There is no pill or therapist that can fix or cure the problem.

Does Hypnosis really help anxiety disorders?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

I have been told that hypnosis really helps with anxiety disorders such as fear of leaving home and panic attacks. I have both of these problems and would like to know if it helps:)

Hello Jessica

Yes, hypnotherapy is excellent for anxiety.

Even the process of being hypnotised is helpful due to the relaxation of the body.

Anxiety is a polite word for fear & hypnosis has many techniques for uncovering or resolving such matters.

Comparison of generalized anxiety disorders and specific phobias?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I honestly spent an hour going through my textbook and cannot figure out the answer. I know what both of them are specifically but I dont know the answer to this multiple choice question:
Compare to generalized anxiety disorders, specific phobias are more:
A-Persistent
B-Intense
C-Irrational
D-Focused

Well I would guess D by process of elimination. Those who suffer from either will tell you that their affliction is indeed persistant. Meaning that it hangs with them instead of just showing up once and then going away.

Both are definately intense. Those who are anxious about life in general are often so worked up that they cannot even leave their homes or avoid situations they find too stimulating. While the person who is arachnaphobic will tell you that they massivly terrified upon finding a spider in the bathtub.

When looked at objectively, Both general anxiety disorder and specific phobies are irrational. They are an overreaction to things that pose very little if any threat to the individual. However they are unable to not be scared.

That leaves Focused. During the moments of panic or anxiety the individual is indeed focused. He or she becomes overwhelmed with their anxiety and can do almost nothing else untill the perceived threat is gone. Hope this helps a little.

My family is plagued with OCD and severe anxiety disorders, why am I the only one bipolar?

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Ok, I interviewed a bunch of people alive on my dads side and moms side of the family.

Basically I talked to about 30 family members over the course of the year, and all seem to have severe OCD or atleast one or more anixety disorders.

NOT ONE is bipolar, and I feel really unlucky im the only one in the entire family that is bipolar.

I though bipolar is hereditary…what happened?

Bipolar only manifests in both of identical twins 70% of the time, so maybe it’s there in your family’s gene pool but others haven’t developed symptoms. Or, if some of your relatives have anxiety and depression it could be misdiagnosed bipolar type II. Or, maybe if you went back another generation or could know how ppl who died young would have been if they lived longer you’d find it. Or, maybe you are a fluke.?? The one thing I can definitely tell you is that even if you have another relative or two with it like I do, you still feel ripped off because it doesn’t really matter whether anyone else has it or not. You do.
