What do you do when you have both anxiety disorders and bipolar disorder?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Do you go on two types of medications at the same time, is therapy effective, etc.?

Sometimes the mood stabilizers used to treat bipolar disorder can also "treat" anxiety as a side effect. That is, if the anxiety stems from the bipolar disorder (which it sometimes does), then treating the mood disorder will also treat the anxiety because the anxiety isn’t a separate problem of its own, but rather a byproduct of the bipolar disorder.

However, I’ve seen a lot of your posts in the past. You have said that you suffer primarily from anxiety, and that you didn’t even consider bipolar disorder as being a possibility until your psychiatrist brought up cyclothymia. Have you gotten a second opinion on that? Has another mental health professional corroborated the diagnosis of cyclothymia? If you are unsure about your diagnosis (which you have certainly seemed to be in the past) you should seek a second opinion, just to make sure you’re being treated for the right thing. Since you never noticed your mood as being a problem in the past, a diagnosis of a mood disorder seems a little odd to me.

There is a type of therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that is extremely effective in treating anxiety disorders of all kinds. It addresses your thoughts and the resulting anxious behaviors, and by changing (or "restructuring") your thoughts, allows you to change your behaviors and beat your anxiety. Even if your anxiety does stem from bipolar, which is questionable at this point, it will help you manage your symptoms in a much better way with or without medication.

Good luck.

How to be less shy with anxiety disorders?

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

I have anxiety issues (I take an SSRI), and I can be a bit shy. I’m always thinking people are judging me and it’s a bit stifling for my social life.

I think the problem is I don’t like giving up control, but I still don’t know what to do.

Does anyone who has anxiety have a way to deal with this?

Thanks!!

As a fellow sufferer, I can tell you that you’re on the wrong anxiety med. I had to try two different ones before I found the right one. When I found the right one (Klonopin for ME,) I knew immediately. Go back to your doctor, tell him/her EVERYTHING. That’ll help him figure out which one would be better for you. No more anxiety/panic attacks really helps you not only physically, but mentally too! Don’t put it off. You owe it to yourself to have calm nerves. What a difference!! :)

Anxiety disorders and depression related to anxiety?

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Can anyone offer any advice as to where to get help when suffering from an anxiety disorder and depression because of it? I’m already on anti-anxiety medications and im not sure how i feel about anti-depressant, but please still say you input regarding them. I am also seeing a therapist weekly, regarding my anxiety.
im at a stand still now and i don’t know where to go or what to do and im worried that i will never break out of this …. im loosing hope.
please help! :(

From my experiences, I would suggest DBT.

I did DBT (also dubbed as developing a better today) in a group oriented environment with people my age-group.
Being able to see people with the same problems that I had helped more than I can really express. Since you are already seeing a therapist weekly, I think the next best thing would be group therapy. Ask your therapist if they know any DBT or group therapy programs in your area.

Do you think people with generalized anxiety disorders can become successful?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Can they have careers, as medical doctors, etc. And can they accomplish lots in life? Or is life worthless for them at this point?

it really depends on the person. many people with illness still accomplish great things. All of us has a dream whether it is something small like having a big family or a big dream like being a doctor. dreams are the things that gives us hope and strength to go on in life. Dreams get crushed sometimes but from those crushed dreams you get even more strength in order to move one try again and succeed. maybe im rambling but the point is NO one can tell you whether you can or CANNOT do something.and i really think that people with illness sometimes accomplish more then regular people if they don’t give up hope and keep trying.

What are some of the symptoms of anxiety and anxiety disorders?

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Also, depression? Thanks so much.

I have trichotillomania, and I’ve heard that these can lead to it?

shaking
fear of social situations
inability to get words out
stiffness
depression
nervous stomach
sweating
rapid heartbeat
nail biting

Maybe it is the symtoms of anxiety that make you feel like pulling your hair out or the things that led up to the anxiety. Anyhow, I really dislike all these labels we all have these days!

Do medications for anxiety disorders help with blushing?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

i have really bad anxiety and i blush really easily and frequently. do u think this would help with it?

Yes!!!

I had really bad anxiety and got put on Paxil, and within a few months I hardly ever blushed, and now that its been a year since i’ve been on it, I almost NEVER blush. No matter what. I used to blush for other people, at least a few times a day, and stay flushed for like an hour after I was embarrassed.

20mg of Paxil and life has much less stress, I can talk in front of a class and raise my hand, and not throw up before presentations. It’s great =]

I went to therapy as well though, so I recommend that to help you as you take medication.

Don’t listen to people who say they don’t effect each other because they do. The pill doesn’t directly treat blushing, but by treating anxiety it reduces blushing because you aren’t as self conscious and nervous all the time.

Is zoloft better than prozac for anxiety disorders?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I have ocd. I’ve been on prozac for almost 5 months. It hasn’t really helped much, only a little. Do you think it would be better to switch to zoloft (sertraline) for my anxiety?

In scientific studies, all SSRI’s are almost identical when it comes to effectiveness over all. Some people do tend to respond better to one SSRI compared to another. Also, initially people thought clomipramine (and older medication – a tricyclic) was more effective than SSRI’s, but they probably show similar efficacy and SSRI’s have far less bothersome side effects.

Be aware that usually higher doses of the SSRI’s are needed to treat OCD symptoms compared to the dosages used to treat depression. Often people will need to take 60mg / day of prozac to get improvement for their OCD. If you are tolerating it without significant side effects, you should talk to your doctor about increasing the dose.

If you have a good psychiatrist, he/she should be able to help you with th decision of changing the dose or changing medications.

Is Abilify appropriate for anxiety disorders?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

My nurse practitioner put my on Abilify. I have generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and moderate obsessive compulsive disorder.

It wouldn’t be my first choice. Most psychiatrists that I consult with (I’m a therapist) tend to use celexa as a first-line treatment for anxiety related disorders. Usually, they will prescribe this in conjunction with an anti-anxiety for panic/situationally bound anxiety as a PRN (or taken as needed). Hope this helps.
