How do you date someone with an anxiety disorder?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

The guy I’m currently dating told me he has anxiety disorder and takes xanax for it. I really like him and I need to know how to handle this kind of behavior. What should I expect and what can I do to help?

I have a friend who has anxiety and takes medicine for it also. Its really not that big of a deal. As for what to expect: Sometimes when my friend gets really anxious, he has a hard time breathing. He just gets a drink of water (or whatever is near), sits down and takes deep breathes. We usually help calm him down by patting his back or making jokes. I haven’t ever seen him have a serious panic attack, but i heard they are pretty bad. In which case its kind of out of your hands. The most you can do is try to relax him with a soothing voice and rubbing his back or something. But honestly, unless he is worse than my friend, it won’t effect your relationship too much. If hes easily triggered, then it might be a different story but if he has it well controlled like my friend, you will barely notice it.

How can I deal with Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

I just discovered I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and I don’t know what to do. I have fatigue and my body hurts all day long. I’m very shy and have no friends and get mad very easily. I feel really depressed and feel alone. I heard that I need to exercise more often and try a relaxing activity like yoga. But what else can I do? How long will it take for me to heal? I’m 15 years old.

First off, if you really want to get better, you can start by trying the advice you’ve already been given. There is no magical cure for GAD or overnight fix. You are young, so I can understand you impatience and wanting a quick fix. But the longer you search for one–the longer you will be putting off what really works.

There are also other tools to help besides medication. Since you don’t have a specific phobia, it’s harder to pinpoint a trigger. However, anxiety feeds anxiety. You should try to identify negative thinking trends and focus on dismissing negative thought. You can, I know because I have along with a countless number of other people.

It takes commitment to getting better. Do searches on positive affirmations and RBT.

The most important thing is to commit yourself to change and understand that it will take time. Don’t waste your time looking for quick fixes–some work–such as medications, but it’s not a permanent solution and you will become dependent if you don’t address your core issues. You have an opportunity to change the direction of the rest of your life. Put in the work now so you won’t regret it later.

Can a nightmare dream create an anxiety disorder?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

What if someone drempt a terrifing expience in a dream.
Could the experience resualt in a anxiety disorder?

Hmmm….well, I find that a really scary dream can stay with me for awhile, you can have it kind of sitting there in the back of your mind, or kind of sitting there in your gut, and leaving you feeling a little ill at ease as you go about your day. I don’t think that a scary dream causes an anxiety disorder, though. More like a reflection of anxiety that existed before the dream. One of the reasons it nags at you for awhile, is that the dream is trying to direct your attention to something in your spirit that needs to be attended to, something that has been pushed aside, something you don’t want to address, but your spirit needs to address it, even when your waking self doesn’t want to, and if you are unwilling to address it in your waking life, you will do so in your dreams, if you want to or not. For example, if you are having problems with another, and haven’t addressed the problem, because you don’t want to "rock the boat", you may have a scary dream of being at sea in a terrible storm, those feelings will still try to work themselves out one way or another, or you will have a dream to motivate you to pay attention to the issue and figure out a way to work it out. That is just an example of how an existing anxiety can cause a scary dream. A dream is a story you tell yourself, about yourself, and a dream log is a valuable tool to help you learn about how to decipher the imagery of your own dreams, which is a kind of shorthand written in images. If you can figure out what the dream is trying to direct your attention to, and resolve the issue you are trying to talk to yourself about, then the anxious feelings will go away. Good luck, I hope you find the answers you seek…..

How to find a job when you have an anxiety disorder?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I desperately need to get a job but the problem is that I’m terrified of holding a job. I have officially been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and even my therapist said it would be better to get medication and treatment before attempting something that to me is very scary, which would be getting a job. But I can’t pay for therapy or medicine or any of my bills and there is no one to borrow from. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do? I’m also very nervous around people so babysitting is out of the question. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I’m so sorry for you – that would be a terrible way to live a life. Even with everyday complaints about the work environment, there is so much you’re missing by not being able to work (friendships, knowledge, purpose, income…). I don’t think you can afford NOT to pay for therapy and take medication. It might be worth running up a credit card so you can get out there and get a job – and with a job health benefits. You can also spend time educating yourself about anxiety disorders – and learn about cognitive therapy (it’s very helpful). I’d also recommend two books "I’m Ok, You’re Ok" and "Don’t Panic" (search amazon.com). Good luck!

Can anyone suggest a good solution for anxiety disorder?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I have suffered with anxiety for most of my life and have tried different medications with varying degrees of success. I’ve also tried drinking too much, which just makes things worse lol. What solutions have others found to anxiety disorder?

It can be a case of trial and error with the different medications that are available. Your doctor should keep monitoring you and suggest alternatives if you do not feel that what you are taking is working, don’t be afraid to ask to be referred to a specialist for CBT if you don’t feel that medication is the answer. There are changes to your diet and lifestyle such as cutting back on caffeine and alcohol that can make a big difference. Sometimes just by experiencing a drop in physical symptoms you can find yourself a platform to move forward.
You didn’t mention what type of anxiety disorder you are suffering with e.g. general, social or panic attacks. Has your doctor identified which group that your anxiety belongs to. There are a lot of good books and websites on the subject of anxiety. One I like is www.anxiety-disorder-solutions.com, and of course a wikipedia search can also turn out some useful info. I would suggest that you should read up on the condition so that you can feel more confident discussing it with your doctor.
Good luck
