How do I deal with my partners anxiety attacks?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I don’t know what to do when my partner starts to have anxiety attacks. Just like him I feel helpless and I get angry. When he says he’s scared, feeling like his heart is fluttering I don’t know what to say or do except hold him and say it’s going to be ok. Sometimes it gets irritating and I want to leave. How do I deal with his sudden changes in behavior?

Hi Brian! You sound like a great friend in that you are wanting to respond to your partner in the best manner possible to help.

I struggled with anxiety for years & my husband stood by as a good support to me. Here are a few tips that really helped me:

1. Know that the anxiety attacks are not in your partners control
2. Anxiety attacks are generally IRRATIONAL fears
3. Talk your partner through them
4. Do not belittle your partner during or after the attack

I used to really struggle with going to the doctor & having blood work done. So while we were expecting our now 8-year-old son, I would drive to the doctor, with my husband as the passenger. (Usually he would drive while I was the passenger.) Now this doesn’t seem like anything big, however… we discovered that if I drove to the doctor, I had to concentrate on driving rather than sitting as an idle passenger ruminating on how I was going to have to have blood work done & working myself into a frenzy.

Not sure when anxiety attacks enter in, but have your partner work his way through them if at all possible– continue in his routine.

Hope this makes sense & hope it helps!

Best of Luck!
Christine

Help – How to prevent an Serious Anxiety Attacks from occuring?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Serious anxiety attacks.

Had them for years.

They have ruined so many parts of my life I cant stand it anymore. Socially, I dont go out anymore, not even to the shops. Considering all the life experience Ive had though, the social bit doesnt really bother me now.

Im due to be somewhere tomorrow morning, it will be an enclosed room with people I dont know, I will not be able to leave under any circumstances. I cant get out of it like I usually would.

Please no smart arses. It feels like your suffocating and dying, dizzy, shaking, weak, nausious, blurred vision, hyperventilating and much more.

Dont want to take drugs, Ive been there and I HATE taking pills now. Anti-depressants would be what they would give and I DONT want them. Valium often make me feel worse.

If you are anti-meds I would suggest watching your diet, eating healthy and exercising can be very helpful in making emotions and your thought process healthier. Also it takes discipline to beat anxiety and depression. Slowly but surely force yourself to go out into social settings, and allow yourself little by little more stress so you can exercise your ability to defeat the anxiety you struggle with.

How do you deal with anxiety attacks?

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

I just recently started having severe anxiety attacks and i do not believe that medicinal prescription drugs are an option I’m willing to endure

I suffered from pretty debilitating anxiety and depression for a couple years and found that exercise and diet really seemed to help me… in addition to maintaining normal hours (not staying up all night and sleeping all day)… and taking vitamin supplements (Vitamin b-50 really helped me… though check with your doctor). Some say to avoid caffeine, excess sugar and make sure to walk EVERYDAY, snow, sleet or hail, for 30 minutes. You might want to try something like Yoga as well… I hear the breathing exercises really help.

Hope that helps. Best wishes!

If you get anxiety attacks, could use please answer these questions for me?

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Hi, i am writing an essay on people with anxiety disorders and I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me?

1. Do you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert?

2. If you get panic attacks, was there any traumatic event that
preceded your first one—such as death or illness of a loved one?

3.. How old were you when you had your first panic attack?

4. Were your parents nurturing? (Lots of hugs, affectionate, full of praise?)

Thanks a lot!

1. Introverted (but not excessively so)
2. Not really, rather lamely it was exam anxiety that brought it on
3. 17
4. Yes, I couldn’t fault them

After anxiety attacks, can you be left with extreme weakness in your upper body, including neck and eyes?

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

After several anxiety attacks in a couple weeks, I have felt extremely weak and shaky, is this normal?

yes, I usually feel weak, dizzy, and shaky after I have an anxiety attack

the fact that you have had a lot lately is just making you feel even more weak and shaky
because you are feeling this way, you will be less apt to try to prevent future anxiety attacks

try to find a way to have less (or none(but ik that that is really hard)
go see a doctor and see if he can give you anything to help

anxiety attacks stink, ik from experience
good luck

Can Prozac be causing my anxiety attacks?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

I have recently started having anxiety attacks. They are occuring every couple of days. I have been taking Prozac for about 6 months, for depression. Could being on it long term be causing my anxiety?

you need an anxiety medicine like buspar or a change in medication. sometimes you become immune to prozac long-term.

I have frequent numbness in my right leg while driving, but I do not suffer any anxiety attacks. What is it?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I have frequent numbness in my right foot and leg while driving, but I do not suffer from any anxiety attacks. I am a 35 yr old caucasian male that weighs 175 lbs. I am 5 feet 11 inches tall. Thanks for all the helpful responses.

1) Do you carry your wallet in your right hip pocket?
2) Is there a spring in your car seat that presses on your right buttock?
3) Do you hold your right leg stiff when driving?

I think you are doing something that presses on the nerves of your leg in the back, or you may be slowing the blood circulation behind your knee.
Give yourself a good evaluation on how you are driving, WHILE you are driving.

How do you handle anxiety attacks?

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Lately, I have been having anxiety attacks a lot. I know the cause. My mind is on overload. I am thinking about stuff that needs to get done, appointments that need to made and kept and all kinds of stuff. For the past month I just can’t seem to clear my mind and I find myself unable to catch my breath, heart racing, light headed and sick to my stomach. I can’t be a bundle of nerves anymore.
What can I do?

What normally helps me (I suffer from them, too), is writing down everything that you need to do and even the thoughts you maybe feeling. With the list of things to do, do one thing at a time. Only look at that one thing that you can get done right away or that needs to be done immediately before moving to the next one. Once you take one thing at a time, this should help ease the tention. I know this maybe hard, but this helps me. Also, taking a deep breath and finding some relaxing time for yourself as well, helps. If you can take about a 15-30 minute break to just relax, do it. Get yourself something warm or hot to drink (if it won’t over heat you). Also, finding a quiet place to calm your mind, helps. Just remember, take it one day at a time. Take care!

How can I get over anxiety attacks without taking medicine?

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

I have some severe anxiety attacks when I procrastinate on getting things done, but if I get things done too early, then I still get anxiety attacks as if I still need to do something. I’m quite panicked and it’s getting to the point where I don’t want to be around too many people. I am at my wits end, and I’ve isolated myself away from people. Also, my anxiety causes me to overeat and I am about 70 lbs. overweight and don’t have a grip on anything. I especially get anxious the day before I have to go to work. I work in healthcare and am especially anxious the day before. It is affecting my life. Does someone have some fool-proof advice? I’d prefer not to take meds (I’m already on some meds), but maybe a clue as to a different way of thinking might help me emensely. Thank you…

Almighty God is your best Healer. God loves you, and you are precious to Him. Jesus died on the Cross to save us from condemnation, and qualifying us to Heaven. Heaven is all light and love, eternal without end. This life is short and uncertain. Never, never, miss Heaven for anything of this troubled world. Best wishes for happiness and Heaven!
