What are alternatives to dealing anxiety/depression without drugs?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

I am taking meds now and they are not for me. Are there a ny alternatives

well ,i asked my doctor once if i can get out of my depression without pills , he said i can but it will take more time .
so taking the right pills is very important .
i think using the alternatives should be after taking the pills ,so you can avoid having a relapse ..
there are many alternatives here are some :
1 – ACTION: never shut down .keep achieving , keep aiming ,start with little tasks that you can accomplish .action can build you a great sense of worth !
2- CONTROL : CONTROL YOUR FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS .
don’t let them run wildly. try everyday to think about the positives .
just trash all your negatives .don’t focus on the past and on the problems .don’t describe the problem ,instead find a solution .

3-LAUGH : humor helped me a lot . lighten your spirit .put a smile on your face .a simple act and a simple first step .rent a funny sitcom .
take things lightly .don’t let them get to you ! laughter is a natural antidepressant and it is free !!!!
4- VISUALIZE: dream and day dream .see yourself above your depression. see your troubles so small and solvable !
5- SPIRITUAL GROWTH :find happiness in something ,somebody ,yourself ,in goodness and in God

i have been using them daily since 10 years ,and thank God for not falling into that black hole again .
i hope i helped
i wish you never step into depression again !

What can I do for my social anxiety/depression besides medication and therapy?

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

I’ve been in therapy and on medication for about a year now, and I don’t think that it’s been doing enough. It’s so hard for me to make close friends and I don’t have a good relationship with my parents, so there isn’t anyone that I can talk to. Please help if you can….

Hi,

The 3 best things to do first are to:
- make sure you are getting at least 7 hours sleep a night (and not less or too much more than that – don’t sleep all day)
- exercise a few times a week where you actually sweat, this release nature pain killers and feel good chemicals and can reduce stress
- eat good foods or at least cut out the bad foods. You brain and body gets all the vitamins and minerals that are digested in your stomach and if you don’t give it good foods then you don’t have the fuel to think clearly and you will have less energy to move around…etc.

If you are successfully doing these 3 things and are still having issues, which many us are, then write down how bad you feel and for how long it has lasted… if you feel you can not cope with depression or anxiety or lack of motivation…etc. and it is seriously negatively affecting your life for long periods of time, then yes go talk to your doctor to refer you to a councillor or psychiatrist and one of the best things you can do is look for a local support group for depression or anxiety or lack of motivation…etc. as these have helped me very much. If you go to Craigslist website for your city, you should be able to search for a group. Or call your cities specific crisis hotline and they should be able to give you some group names and other resources you can utilize to help your condition.
My opion of psychiatrists is that although they can usually tell you what you are suffering from or give it a name, they are not so good at treating it naturally or with groups, most of them give you drugs unfortunatley. Drugs are good if you are so deep in depression that you almost can’t work or go to school and you are having longer periods of depression …etc. They can get you out of the hole, but research very carefully what you take as most of them have side effects and some are very hard to get off of once you get onto them.
Before taking any drugs, talk to a support group or join an online support group such as one of the several on yahoo groups or google groups and see what they are talking about and post a question to them as they would have years of experience about that. Then compare what they said to other resources that you may have access to and them make a decision to use drugs or not. For me, just going to my weekly meetings keeps me feeling ok for now and met some good friends I can talk to. There are several other natural ways to fend off mental issues if you study and reseach it. Could be you are not eating properly or have bad digestion or have a thyroid issue …etc.

I would suggest to get a regular phsyical exam done by doctors to see if anything comes from it. Especially test your thryoid and adrenal glands as my sister had a thryoid issue that affect her energy and moods and I had a DHEA and Cortisol level issue (both produced by adrenal glands) where I ended up taking some DHEA suppliments and eating more foods for it, and felt much better.

Hope this helps and take good care of yourself. This will get better if you just put in a littel time and effort and have faith that you can and will get better.

Does anyone on here receive disability checks for anxiety, depression?

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

The reason I’m asking is because I have been struggling with them for 6 years now due to losing a child and I have tryed to hold jobs but cannot because the anxiety attacks come on surprize.

Yes I am! I receive SSA /disablity from the state Along with Food stamps and Medical insurance. It was a lengthy process. There is a huge form you will have to fill out and they will probably tell you to see a medical Doctor to diagnosis you. I don’t get enough from the state to support me totally . I live with my parents still. i was diagnosised with Post Tramadic Stress disorder. Making it almost impossible to hold a job when i’m going through an eposide of panic attacks and stress.

Here is the #Number you can call to get information (SSI).
800-772-1213
To appley for food stamps call your local Child and family services office. But I believe that the phone # above can help with that too.
Good luck

How can I heal my college anxiety/depression?

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

My classes start tomorrow and I’m in one of the toughest engineering programs in the world. I fear for the difficulty and onerate workload of the classes, not being able to get my full schedule and lose health insurance, and having to disappoint my fellow team members etc etc
There is a lot of pressure because I want to enter the Ph.D program after I graduate.
What can I do to cope with these problems?
Counceling is out of the question (with that record I can say goodbye to my career)

Counseling can’t go on your record if you see a counselor at your college and for engineering it wouldn’t matter anyway. Take time for yourself and get enough sleep. If you do, you will be more productive and feel better.

Can an ordinary doctor prescribe an anxiety/depression med?

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Or do I have to visit a psychiatrist? And can I just tell the doctor about my problem during a normal checkup, or what would be involved?
Totally broke here, so $150 per session at a psychiatrists is not an option here.

no doctors do all that.
however i am not at all saying you dont need them
but lately in todays society doctors are just like; here take these… they dont really try and look into what may be the problem…however ive never been to a psychiatrists. so who nos maybe all are like that. im just saying this because ive been there. and the side effects can be dramatic if its what really what you need.

i hope that made sense.
and i hope you are okay.

How can I give my best effort to get over bad unbearable anxiety depression?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

I dunno what to do? Im suffering all the time from physical problems that I can’t stop thinking bout and it makes me scared. I can’t live with them. Everyday I just think I want to end it. I don’t much any more either. I wish I had amnesia so I couldn’t remember these things that scare me. I know I have to try the therapies medications first but I feel hopeless I don’t see how this fear can possibly be cured. I don’t think there is a solution. So just feel unmotivated. I just want to lay down and sleep and not wake up. How can I motivate my self to do my very best using therapies and medication and give my maximun effort to get well when I feel so hopeless with no quality of life any more and constant suffereing.
I’m already starting therapies and medication soon but I don’t they will work on my unual problem. I just have no hope.

You may feel that you are compleatly alone in your anxiety, but you really are not! It actually gave me chills to read your question… It was an exact picture of me a few years ago. My attcks got so bad that I had to leave a nice job at the radio station I was working at. I got to the point that I could not even get into a car. I spent most of my time in my bedroom basically afraid to go out for fear that something else bad would happen to me. I finally got to the point where I was going to end my own life. Well, Oviously, I did not do it! The next day I made an appointment with a theripist and reached out for help. I would have never seen myself sitting on the "shrinks couch" bearing my dark inner thoughts, but there I was… And I am glad I did. I learned that my attacks were being triggered by Post Traumatic Stress. I had been in a terrible auto accident a number of years ago, but I fully recovered from my injuries, and never gave it another thought. But apperently the memories of the accident lingered in the deep recesses of my mind, and would come back to me every once and a while in the form of a pannic attack. It took me some time in theropy to actually see that not everything in my life was negitive. I learned to look at the positive side of every sitation, instead of sitting back and waiting for the worst to happen. I was also given Zoloft to help with lingering depression. It has helped, sure I still get "down" from time to time, but nothing compaired to how things used to be. It all takes time, and you have to be willing to compleatly change your way of thinking. If you ever have any other questions about this situation, you can feel free to email me at jam961@yahoo.com I am not a theripist, but I have been exactly where you are now, and I was able to fight back… If I could do it, I just know you can too! Just stay strong!

Is there a cure for anxiety depression?

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

I have been struggling with anxiety for the past 6 years, this is why I’m looking for an effective cure for anxiety and get off medication. I’m really on the point to give up, and this makes me afraid.

Has anyone managed to find a good cure for anxiety ?

anxiety is my every day fight for it. I know exactly how you feel. The desperation is big and the impulse of going away . I really know how is it. well let me tell a few things that works for me, maybe work for you too. First you have to follow some rules:

1-You have to learn to change the way you are thinking. This means BLOCK bad thoughts in the moment that came out to your mind.

2-NEVER see violence programs on tv or news that included violence .

3-drink warm milk before going to bed.
Remember my friend life is not easy but who told you it was? I wish you the best to you and if you need to talk here I am.

Suffering anxiety and depression, anyone know what helps?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Currently, I have been so unhappy. I’ve always suffered OCD in a major way (so bad I’ve battled both bulemia and anorexia) and I’m a major control freak, who always has to have a plan, and if it doesn’t work out I go crazy. In fact, my boyfriend- who I was ENGAGED to- called it quits because he thinks I’m not fun to be around, and he says there’s always something distracting me in a negative way. :-(

Just this last Wednesday I accidentally overdosed on aspirin. I had a terrible migrane, and I took the amount I normally do, but nothing worked. I took another one, and nothing happened. I took ANOTHER one, and nothing. Finally, after taking 6 pills (and I am 5′7" and just 110lbs btw) I noticed that the walls were wiggling, and suddenly spinning. I passed out, and woke up later feeling disoriented and scared. I completly regret having done that, it was horrifying.

I know I have my issues, and I’m really trying to change my ways, but I don’t know how to ask for help (which I really need). I work in the medical field, so if I ask someone I work with I’m worried they won’t look at me the same way again. What should I do? Does anyone else know how I feel?

Thanks in advance,
Mary
Oh and thank you so much, all of you, these answers are full of the support I need. Thanks! Blessings!

Hi Mary Isabella.. Yes dear I know exactly how you feel .I’m not there any more because For 14 years I have been on Paxil. Its a wonderful drug if its the right one for you. Have you ever asked your Dr. if you could try this, first tell him what you are feeling and see what he says. Paxil for me is calming, I don’t get out of control in anger anymore,I stop and think more before I talk. I use good judgment in regards to my health and I’m careful not to mess up. You Need to find a Dr, you like and trust. If you do not have insurance there are health facilities that take people without insurance. Just try them, its better than nothing. You will be able to fix this , I know you can. You need to Pray first, you will need to get all the help you can so ask God to help you in this situation and really mean it. You can trust Him, He will help you..just ask!God Bless you love in Christ missleslie

is there anyone taking welbutrin for depression and anxiety?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

im now going on my 8 day taking it it starting to help when i take it i get energy then after a few hours i dont i take one once also at night time im hoping this weird feeling goes away after a while. i have a doc app in a week just want to see how other people feel when taking this. im taking 75mg twice a day

I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I’ve been taking that for over two years, and it’s working very well for me.

The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active – and wanting to do things – while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can’t tell I’m taking any medication at all.

There are a lot of people that take Wellbutrin with their SSRI’s, it helps to counteract some of the possible side effects – such as drowsiness, weight gain, and the sexual side effects. It really does make a difference!!
