Can you really self talk yourself out of an anxiety or panic attack?
I have severe anxiety and panic attacks and the doctor is thing of taking me off my meds and trying to teach me to self talk to myself. Tell myself that I’m really ok. I’m not having any luck seems so it make them worse!
I had overwhelming anxiety. It turned out to be my use of Splenda. Yup Splenda.
I like to say sucralose, not Splenda, because that is what Splenda is. And it is in a lot of stuff. The package doesn’t have to say Splenda to have sucralose in it. You have to read labels. So, you might still be using it and don’t even know it!
Sucralose is poison. It ruined five years of my life. I had a laundry list of medical problems while taking it, including overwhelming anxiety, depression, mood swings, insomnia and more.
The slogan, "Made from sugar…" is very misleading. Splenda might be made from sugar, but it is far from sugar. The resulting chemical is an organochloride (chlorocarbon). Organochlorides are typically poisons.

Yes, and no. Yes, you can use cognitions to turn your panic attack, around, trouble is, you have to believe those cognitions in your mind.

I’ve tried to talk myself out of a panic attack.
For me, the thing I try to do is think of a ‘happy’ place. Although it can be hard and slow doing, it sometimes work.
I try to think of the words of a song I especially like. My favorite song is a old one from The Moody Blues, it’s called Voices in the Sky. It’s about birds, a old man trying to speak, children skipping rope, the music sounds like birds chirping.

Some people can and some people can’t. The people who are successful at doing so usually get help from a trained therapist. My question is why is your doctor trying to get you off the meds? Are you having bad side effects? If the meds aren’t bothering you and they improve your quality of life, I would just keep taking them.

When I have an asthma attack I just remember that if I move slowly and get to my inhaler I will be OK..When I was little there were no inhalers and I had to learn to move slowly or lie down on the floor and breathe to keep from suffocating. Most people that I have seen that have anxiety attacks cannot breathe because their bronchial tubes squeeze shut cutting off the oxygen flow.
SAME THING!
I would keep an inhaler close at hand in a pocket if you cannot breathe. These are designed to force the bronchial tubes to dilate and allow air into and out of the lungs.
They are in the drugs store and the brand I use is called Primatene Mist and they are about $15.00.
Some druggists will not sell them unless you tell them you are asthmatic because they contain pharmaceutical speed called ephedrine.
Only take one shot and hold it for about 15 seconds and exhale and you will be breathing and OK.
You might have to get your Doctor’s OK to get one.

I don’t recall having panic attacks aside from "night terror" as a child, which I barely remember at all.
It is possible to talk ones self out of a panic attack? Yes, I believe so. It probably takes a lot of time, so hang in there, and keep talking to your doctor about it.

i share your pain , telling myself that I’m fine during a panic attack dose not get it done, for myself anyway.
I would get a second opinion from another doctor.

Yes you can learn to control and tame the attacks…
Overcoming anxiety is no small task.
It takes practice and a lot of hard work.
I used to have panic attacks once a week
due to my high anxiety, so I definitely feel
for you. Fortunately, I can do a lot more
for you than empathize.
By utilizing the techiques below, I was slowly
able to gain control over my anxiety and stop
my panic attacks from occuring. If you
exercise these techiques regularly, you too
will see great improvements in anxiety,
tension and stress.
Breathing:
As the anxiety creeps up, begin to count in
your head. Count 1,2,3,4 — 1,2,3,4 — 1,2,3,4
pausing on the dashes and so on.
You’re not going to actually say or
even think the numbers. You’re going
to breath the numbers.
Take a deep breath in through your
nose for the 1 and 2. Then take a
deep breath out through your mouth
for the 3 and 4. Practice this routine
for a few minutes a day until it
becomes an automated exercise for you.
Practicing really helps a lot.
Practice in a controlled environment.
I used to practice before bed. When
panic does hit, this self-defense
mechanism kicks in without effort.
Control Your Thinking:
When you have negative thoughts,
negative things will come into your
life. Conversely when you have positive
thoughts, positive things will come
into your life.
That’s because thoughts steer the
direction of your life.
The same holds true in moments of high
anxiety. It’s important during these
times to monitor your thoughts and
make sure you force calming ideas
and images into your head.
Nothing is really as bad as it seems and ten
years from now,this particularly stressful
situation won’t exist – so control your
thinking to avoid your mind from falling
into a negative thought spiral.
As soon as you have a negative thought,
throw it out of your head and
counterbalance yourself with a
positive or optimistic thought.
This is a hard one, but after
you monitor your thoughts for
a week or two, you begin to think
more positive in general.
These two tactics helped me a lot.
Other helpful ideas are:
- Participat in Therapy
- Talk to someone you trust
- Exercise (cardio works best)
- Yoga
- Stretching
- Reading
- Meditation
- Take a hot shower
- Go for a Walk
- Listen to Music
