Well, I have a relative and a friend who have been on Klonopin. That’s a medication that might be suggested.

I was prescribed Ativan (Lorezepam) off-label to treat a muscle condition, not anxiety, and I found that for the three months I took it, at the smallest possible dose, I was pretty much useless.

Then there are Xanax and Valium, which I’ve never tried.

No matter how many anti-anxiety medications that you research it will not determine which one is right for you. It is a very good decision to see a psychiatrist and you should be proud of yourself. Some anti-anxiety meds will work for some but not for you. Your psychiatrist will be able to determine which one and what dosage is best for you. The best thing you can do is when you are prescibed an anti-anxiety medication ask your pharmacist about it. Another thing that you need to know is that if one person reports a side effect to their doctor he has to report it and it has to be on the list. So despite the side effects that you may see the chances are very small that you will experience any>

It all depends on the person actually. I have generalized anxiety disorder as well as acute anxiety and panic attacks. For the latter, many times doctors will prescribe a benzodiazepine (i.e. Xanax, Klonopin, Valium), however these are only intended for short term use or "as needed" as a person can develop a tolerance. For long term anxiety, if you suffer from depression, an anti-depressant often will have the added benefit of relieving anxiety. There is also a medication called Buspar. There are many, many antidepressants out there including SSRIs, Tricyclics, etc.and the side effects for each vary from person to person. Best bet is to describe your symptoms in detail to the psychiatrist and he/she will suggest a certain medication. You may have to try a few different ones to find which works best for you.
    Best of luck!

My son and wife used to take lexapro for generalized and relatively mild anxiety. If your anxiety is mild you may want to try adjusting your diet (eating more fruits, vegetables, and less white flour, sugar and processed food). you may also want to try to exercise more if you aren’t already. It may also be appropriate to try a naturopathic remedy first.

Many of the antideppressant and anxiety drugs make you feel strange mentally, have rather bad side effects, and are not easy to stop taking once you start.

Fortunately for my wife and son they were on low dosages of medication, they changed their diet and exercise and we found a natural remedy with good research behind it. You may also want to try this before starting meds. I included a link below to a few resources.
