How do you date someone with an anxiety disorder?

The guy I’m currently dating told me he has anxiety disorder and takes xanax for it. I really like him and I need to know how to handle this kind of behavior. What should I expect and what can I do to help?

I have a friend who has anxiety and takes medicine for it also. Its really not that big of a deal. As for what to expect: Sometimes when my friend gets really anxious, he has a hard time breathing. He just gets a drink of water (or whatever is near), sits down and takes deep breathes. We usually help calm him down by patting his back or making jokes. I haven’t ever seen him have a serious panic attack, but i heard they are pretty bad. In which case its kind of out of your hands. The most you can do is try to relax him with a soothing voice and rubbing his back or something. But honestly, unless he is worse than my friend, it won’t effect your relationship too much. If hes easily triggered, then it might be a different story but if he has it well controlled like my friend, you will barely notice it.

You don’t – that is crap – almost everybody will end up having a problem with anxiety at some point. Be there to encourage him, make sure he takes his meds.

Umm it really depends on how bad it is. If hes taking zanax for it thats a higher dosage. I have anxiety and I take a very low dose medicine for it. Its a form of depression. For me I would snap out, and or get sad for no reason and cry. I felt like there was no light at the end of the tunnel if you know what I mean. I sometimes would feel like there were too many ppl around me say in walmart and Id have to drop my basket and leave. Meds have really helped a lot with this stuff, but the side effects of the meds can be draining. Im not saying he has these things. these were just my experience with it. Everyones different. If the relationship is somewhat new I would feel it out a bit more and see how he is. Ive put my boyfriend through a lot with this, and its hard for him the most Id say, because hes never sure what to do, and that hurts him…
