It would be in your best interest. The meds you are prescribed are most likely tranquilizers, and they come with a risk of dependency. You say "anxiety disorder" - that makes even more sense for you to see a therapist also - to get to the root of it.
References :
If you have an occasional panic attack, yes an MD is fine. A mild anti-anxiety med should help.
If this a more chronic, and you truly have General Anxiety Disorder (GAD), a psychiatrist is the best for diagnosing and treating. The shrink will recommend any therapy needed.
References :
Most of the time if its only anxiety disorder your MD. can help u , But if he feels its something more then yes u will need to see a therapist. In all honesty its really up to your doctor. I wish u luck and hope u feel better soon.

No, you do not have to go to a therapist. I have been taking antidepressants for years and have never needed to see a therapist. However, if the antidepressants aren't completely effective, revisit your physician. You may need the help of a therapist to learn how to adjust your thinking.
References :
Personal experience

If your MD prescribes meds you don't need to see a therapist unless the MD deems it necessary.
References :
It depends on the anxiety disorder, and it depends on the medication. Medication alone is not an evidence-based treatment for anxiety disorders. In fact, depending on the disorder, medication can interfere with therapy, which is supported as a more effective means of treating the disorder. Other times, a combination of the two is best. I think you should seek therapy.

When it comes to anxiety disorders, you have to remember that medication treats the symptoms, not the disorder. If you want to get over the anxiety, you will probably need therapy(exposure therapy with elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy and psychoeducation).
References :
No you cant be made to see a therapist. I am one. however, if you feel the need to talk without being judged by family or friends you may find a therapist helpful. Remember there are counceling centers at afforable rates or sliding scale if needed. donalore
References :
You should, yes. Medication is not going to fix/cure your anxiety problem. Medication is only meant to be taken for a few days until you can get through whatever the situation is that is making you anxious. Like a death in your family. Most doctors will prescribe something to calm you so you can get through the funeral. That's it. You can't stay on it. That's just covering up the problem, it's not fixing it. Not fixing it will just make it worse.
Go to a therapist/counselor and find out what is making you anxious and work through it. Then you not only won't need the medications, you won't have the problem either.
