What’s the best way to beat severe anxiety and depression?

I’ve tried medication, for depression/anxiety as well as bipolar disorder, and nothing seems to be working. I’ve also tried exercise, which helps for a bit but then i cant get myself to maintain a regimine.
It’s really affecting my life, financially and otherwise. Sometimes it’s smoldering to the point that i cant even get myself out of bed. Other times it’s fine, but i’m anxious about everything no matter what. Yeah, take a chill pill. I’d like to eventually be fine without haveing to rely on medication. Any advice? Or even recommendations for meds?
i was reading through the answers thus far and i came across what ‘thebransonaffair’ (sorry if i get the username wrong) had said. It’s right, to some degree. I was diagnosed with OCD, but i didnt put much into becuase i dont have the ‘compulsions,’ unless there’s a damn good reason to– say, if i feel like i need to wash my hands… i’ll scrub the shit out of them. And what was said about questioning myself was also true.. i think this is a big problem also. I doubt myself in everything i do, and by doing so i inadvertently (or subconsciously) self-destruct.

Also, the anxiety isn’t fixed on any one thing…it just depends on the moment.

I’m sick of it.

There are many many different drugs these days for depression, I mean many -families- of drugs, and they all work differently. Keep at it, keep trying. There’s nothing wrong with taking these drugs if they can keep you on an even keel, if they can give you your life back.

I’m surprised to hear you say exercise works. I know it works for me but I didn’t think it worked for people who are severely, chronically depressed. But it’s just a matter of making the right habits. I have to exercise because I’m diabetic. I was never an exercising person before but I’ve gotten into walking and I love it now. You could do it too. It might help to find a partner.

I have been horribly depressed in my life and I know what it’s like. I wish I could be more help. Best of luck to you!

You need to tell your doctor that your meds aren’t working, and he will try something else, until you find just the right medication that is helping you!! It’s awful living with anxiety, and depression, I know because I’ve been there!! My best to you!!!

Well anxiety is an illogical fear, an illegitimate fear and depression is its byproduct. we must first understand those two very important principles to help you.

Next I have to know what kind of anxiety it is, performance anxiety, social, "contamination", "sexual orientation", fear of being assaulted, what? You, being you, would know best. So Now I must sudjest you "habitualize" the anxiety. this is a form of therapy much like holding a "daddy long legs spider" if your afraid of spiders. Your anxiety is a spontaneous and triggered "fear", fear is of course primal and often primal natures which have evolved to keep us save in the caves dwelling days only hold us down in the mass transit, mass media, massive amount of people, city living days. Understand your brain is an ancient computer that evolved over millions of years and only about 10,000 or so ago had humans started building cities. So you must face your anxieties to show your brain (sub concious) that IT IS SAFE. once your brain comes to understadn this you will no longer have there anxiety triggers or depressive reactions to these "obsessions".

Another question is have you been tested for OCD. this is a very common problem, having tormenting "obsessions" but being logical enough to not have "compulsions" . How do I know this, well….I HAVE OCD! And it is as you say debilitating with the anxieties and fears/lack of confidence it creates. But the truth about anxiety is NONE OF IT IS REAL,

another problem people with anxieties have is they know, more often then not that they have no reason to "fear" the things they do, unless of course its a "phobia". Well, knowing this it is only logical that you begin TRUSTING YOURSELF, as im sure you are very smart, so smart in fact you question your smartness. Something dumb people fail to do or ever think of doing.

Trust yourself, ignore the anxieties and expose yourself to them. my best adivce and wishes.

I suffer from depression, and I am bi-polar. What really helps me… I know a lot of guys would rather not do this. But I write everything down. Whether it’s what making me depressed or what makes me happy. Reading the happy things brings back the memories and puts a smile on my face. I use livejournal.com. You can keep everything private if that’s what you want. Or you can share your feeling and people can respond to whatever your going through.

I also took up a couple of hobbies to take my mind off of things. I do gardening and make hemp necklaces… again I’m a girl so you have to find something you like to do. But I noticed if I am really miserable and if I want to be alone I’ll go somewhere where no one will bother me and listen to music, "happy music" nothing too depressing… reading helps me too, it gets me out of my world and puts me in another one.

You just have to find things that interest you enough to clear your mind. Sorry if my advice sucks… it’s just what I do.

Try everything before you decide to depend on drugs. Sometimes they cause more problems than they help.

    My Life Experience…

    Hi

I would like to take this opportunity of introducing myself – I am a natural health consultant, massage therapist and kinesiologist. I have 17 years of experience in Natural Health Clinics and Chiropractic Centres. Now I have my own business – working from home – which gives me the freedom to work my own hours and work with the people I want to work with. I now have the benefit of balanced nutrition in my daily life. All this provides freedom of lifestyle – with health and wealth.

Now with anxiety and depression you need an overall balanced nutritional program that provides optimum health so that the brain chemicals can also be balanced to alleviate anxiety and depression. Mix this with exercise (as you already know this helps too) and medication until you get that balance – then you can gradually go off meds. depending on which you you take. It’s an overall lifestyle change – that only you can choose to commit to.

You could have all this too by visiting my website, check out the benefits for you.

i wish i knew! i have the same problem.

as i get older i have come to accept dep and anx as a part of who i am. i take medication, work out, eat healthy, have a support system, and still suffer setbacks once in a while.

So the real question is, how do you learn to embrace your depression and anxiety symptoms so you can begin to live a better life? Stop fighting it so much. Take your meds; effexor works good for me. Find one that works for you and take it everyday. Find an exercise routine you enjoy and do it every day. See, living a good life requires commitment and a level of self-acceptance not everyone wants to make.

Look up self affirmations in the self help section. These help to build up your self esteem. good luck.
