Thr Army and Medicals, Bi Polar and other Mental Illness.?

I really want to join the British Army.
I recently received my Army Medical Questionnaire back from my GP. I am not sure if I can look through it but did as, if he’d missed anything I could get it sent back to him to correct. But upon checking everything was filled in. I noticed several points which I think has completely screwed over my chances of joining.
I have already mentioned myself that I have suffered over the past few years with depression and anxiety. On and off. One point included self harm (I know that does not completely disqualify as it stated in the guidelines over two attempts of self harm does… It was once and will be once completely)
My mother has long term mental health problems, She has Bi Polar Affective Disorder which the doctor has mentioned in my questionnaire.
He also put in extra notes that he believes that because of this my involvement could trigger this off in myself and the demands would worsen my depression.

I always thought that bi polar wa not genetic and the same doctor had told me the same. also in the past that army involvement wouldn’t be a problem as I’m controlling it. but now he’s put that.
Could anyone just help me with this. My partner told me to send off the questionnaire and leave it for the army to say, but I just dont want to waste their time if no need.

Suffering from depression will almost definitely ruin your chances of joining.

However, I think that if you have been off medication for at least a year you will be allowed to join.

Give your local recruitment office a ring and they will be able to give you definite information.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!

I dont think you’ll get in. The army requires their soldiers not only to have clean bill of health physically, but mentally too.

Your doc is putting his career on line if he states you have non-reoccurring mental illnesses so he is legally bound to tell the truth. If he says youre fine to join and you take a depressive ’spell’ and shoot up the barracks, the gps to blame.

I dont think he was correct to tell you the army would not trigger your deppressive illness, it gave you false hope.

I agree to send the application off to the army for their consideration – at the end of the day the worst they can say is no
