What are alternatives to dealing anxiety/depression without drugs?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

I am taking meds now and they are not for me. Are there a ny alternatives

well ,i asked my doctor once if i can get out of my depression without pills , he said i can but it will take more time .
so taking the right pills is very important .
i think using the alternatives should be after taking the pills ,so you can avoid having a relapse ..
there are many alternatives here are some :
1 – ACTION: never shut down .keep achieving , keep aiming ,start with little tasks that you can accomplish .action can build you a great sense of worth !
2- CONTROL : CONTROL YOUR FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS .
don’t let them run wildly. try everyday to think about the positives .
just trash all your negatives .don’t focus on the past and on the problems .don’t describe the problem ,instead find a solution .

3-LAUGH : humor helped me a lot . lighten your spirit .put a smile on your face .a simple act and a simple first step .rent a funny sitcom .
take things lightly .don’t let them get to you ! laughter is a natural antidepressant and it is free !!!!
4- VISUALIZE: dream and day dream .see yourself above your depression. see your troubles so small and solvable !
5- SPIRITUAL GROWTH :find happiness in something ,somebody ,yourself ,in goodness and in God

i have been using them daily since 10 years ,and thank God for not falling into that black hole again .
i hope i helped
i wish you never step into depression again !

I want to hurt myself. And yes I am attention seeking, please read?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

I want to hurt myself because I suffer from Anxiety and Depression and I feel like nobody understands or cares and my medication is making me want to hurt myself and I have never self harmed but I want to cut myself to see who cares and to show people how I hurt? Is this bad?

i think alot of people do it for that reason, its not really right because there should be other ways to find out who cares

hurting yourself is bad and gets addictive, and is very hard to stop

i understand why youde want to, and get your reasons, but please try not to hurt yourself, it doesnt make you bad to want pople to care, but people do care, doing this will just hurt you and might not get the affect that you want and people might just tell doctors or whatever

How do you handle anxiety while waiting for an important college-admission decision?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

The applications themselves are okay because proactive, but the waiting period is brutal. I’m having insomnia, anxiety dreams, fits of listless apathy, existential crises, flights of panic. It’s lovely. Anyone have some tips on how to deal?

I think just being able to talk to someone about it will help. I’m waiting to hear about my college of music auditions and it is BRUTAL. I used to have nightmares almost every night, when I could get to sleep, but I started talking about it with my councilor and friends and it has really helped.

Good luck on getting in!

What can I do for my social anxiety/depression besides medication and therapy?

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

I’ve been in therapy and on medication for about a year now, and I don’t think that it’s been doing enough. It’s so hard for me to make close friends and I don’t have a good relationship with my parents, so there isn’t anyone that I can talk to. Please help if you can….

Hi,

The 3 best things to do first are to:
- make sure you are getting at least 7 hours sleep a night (and not less or too much more than that – don’t sleep all day)
- exercise a few times a week where you actually sweat, this release nature pain killers and feel good chemicals and can reduce stress
- eat good foods or at least cut out the bad foods. You brain and body gets all the vitamins and minerals that are digested in your stomach and if you don’t give it good foods then you don’t have the fuel to think clearly and you will have less energy to move around…etc.

If you are successfully doing these 3 things and are still having issues, which many us are, then write down how bad you feel and for how long it has lasted… if you feel you can not cope with depression or anxiety or lack of motivation…etc. and it is seriously negatively affecting your life for long periods of time, then yes go talk to your doctor to refer you to a councillor or psychiatrist and one of the best things you can do is look for a local support group for depression or anxiety or lack of motivation…etc. as these have helped me very much. If you go to Craigslist website for your city, you should be able to search for a group. Or call your cities specific crisis hotline and they should be able to give you some group names and other resources you can utilize to help your condition.
My opion of psychiatrists is that although they can usually tell you what you are suffering from or give it a name, they are not so good at treating it naturally or with groups, most of them give you drugs unfortunatley. Drugs are good if you are so deep in depression that you almost can’t work or go to school and you are having longer periods of depression …etc. They can get you out of the hole, but research very carefully what you take as most of them have side effects and some are very hard to get off of once you get onto them.
Before taking any drugs, talk to a support group or join an online support group such as one of the several on yahoo groups or google groups and see what they are talking about and post a question to them as they would have years of experience about that. Then compare what they said to other resources that you may have access to and them make a decision to use drugs or not. For me, just going to my weekly meetings keeps me feeling ok for now and met some good friends I can talk to. There are several other natural ways to fend off mental issues if you study and reseach it. Could be you are not eating properly or have bad digestion or have a thyroid issue …etc.
I would suggest to get a regular phsyical exam done by doctors to see if anything comes from it. Especially test your thryoid and adrenal glands as my sister had a thryoid issue that affect her energy and moods and I had a DHEA and Cortisol level issue (both produced by adrenal glands) where I ended up taking some DHEA suppliments and eating more foods for it, and felt much better.

Hope this helps and take good care of yourself. This will get better if you just put in a littel time and effort and have faith that you can and will get better.

What is the difference between fear and anxiety ?

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Throughout our lives, we experience a variety of different circumstances and situations that would result to us experiencing different kinds of emotions. Some situations can cause us to experience positive feelings and emotions such as joy and excitement. Other times, we experience situations and circumstances that would bring about feelings of loneliness, loss, sadness, fear and anxiety. Though we eventually recuperate from these negative emotions, the effects these situations and circumstances have on us can be so profound that it eventually affects us later on in our lives.

Fear and anxiety often make us have very similar symptoms such as muscle tension, increased heart rate and shortness of breath brought about by the body’s flight-or-fight instinct. It is no surprise then that for many of us, fear and anxiety pretty much refer to the same thing. But as far as psychologists are concerned, fear and anxiety are two completely different disorders that require different types of treatments.

Fear is referred to as an emotional response towards a situation whereby an individual feels threatened. The cause of the threat is realistic in nature. Oftentimes, fear towards a particular situation or event is brought about by a traumatic experience that the individual experienced earlier on in their life. The effect of this traumatic event is carried by the individual throughout his or her entire life so much so that when the individual finds himself or herself in a similar situation, he or she begins to exhibit the symptoms mentioned above.

On the other hand, anxiety is considered to be a psychological disorder where the individual experience symptoms similar to those that who face fearful situations or circumstances. The difference between anxieties and fear is that, unlike fear, symptoms leading to anxiety occur even though there is no apparent risk or cause for physical harm to occur. More often than not, the cause for the individual to feel anxious cannot be pinpointed. This is in stark contrast with fear where the individual can readily determine the root cause of their fears. Those that suffer from anxiety find themselves helpless and unable to cope with the symptoms so much so that it begins to interfere with their daily activities and interactions with other people. Anxiety is often one of the primary causes of other psychological disorders such as depression and personality disorders.

On the other hand, fear can often cause the individual to be empowered to deal with this and overcome this. Because they are able to determine the root cause of their fear, they are able to look into options that would help them overcome these fears and be able to live a rather normal life.

What is the difference between anxiety and depression?

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

My fiance has really changed in the last few months, he has admitted to suffering from anxiety (which he refuses to get help for) but I cant help but feel its alot deeper than that. He is constantly down, gets extremely angry about the smallest things, has no motivation to do anything, has very little patience with our kids, doesnt help out with anything anymore….. The list goes on.

How do I know the difference and what signs to look out for? Also how do I get him to see how important it is for him to seek help/advice???

Anxiety is a state of apprehension or fear, either real or imagined, resulting from anticipation of a threatening event or situation

Depression is a mental state characterized by a pessimistic sense of inadequacy and a despondent lack of activity

It’s very important for him to seek help his problems are having an impact on family life.
