what does Serotonin have to do with anxiety/depression?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

what does Serotonin have to do with anxiety/depression, and what do anxiety/depression medications do? Increase Serotonin or decrease Serotonin and how does that effect the persons brain? while using meds?

I have had moderate depression my whole life. It is caused by a chemical imbalance in my brain – my body doesn’t produce enough Seratonin on its own. Medications such as Zoloft usually neither increase nor decrease the amount of Seratonin – they simply block off some of the receptors in your brain, making the Seratonin you *do* produce last much longer than it otherwise would, keeping your brain better supplied throughout any given day.

EDIT:

Seratonin is a chemical released when you are HAPPY – it is an endorphin. It is **absolutely not** a chemical that triggers anxiety or despair!

How do I really choose the best career path for me? Can I work directly with people with social phobia?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I am a single man, 42 years old with two teenagers and a mortgage. I have been avoidinga real education because I guess I never realized the value of it and figured I would always work with my hands and could gain skill through on the job experience. I have social phobia and have been really depressed lately and need to get back on my feet somehow. I want to become a professional at something like my peers all seem to have done.

i have depression and social phobia 2…its really hard starting a career so late in life…and with those problems!

maybe (if u want to help people) u could volunteer or work at a helpline!…then u wouldn’t have to be in the same room as the person…but u could help them with their problems…

u know its never too late tho!…u could still become a plumber or electrician or carpenter…u need to become an apprentice first!

So why do I get serious anxiety and some depression over things I cannot control?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

wondering why i get so anxious when i can’t control things.

for instance, i’m 32….I have 2 kids and I have a great career as a software designer.

anyway, i rarely ever miss work because of illness. i usually have planned out days off.

this week i’ve been sick all week….Monday our building was evacuated cause of the floods….I went home but that day I was already very sick. Called in on Tuesday (eventhough office was shut down till noon), Wednesday and today I went in for just 30 minutes cause I was trying to make the effort.

Anyway, why do I get so nervous/anxious and utter despair feeling when I can’t help being sick?

I hate calling in and I rarely ever do it but when I do it’s hard to recover cause I’m constantly thinking my job is in jeopardy eventhough I’m a very good employee.

can somebody help me sleep good tonight cause I know I’m too sick to go tomorrow and I can’t get over this despair feeling.

thanks

Our thoughts influence our emotions. If you think that everything is bad, you will feel depressed and anxious. If you think, things have been bad, but are getting better and think realistic thoughts, then you can improve your mood.

Additionally, try doing some deep breathing exercises. In through your nose, out slowly through your mouth. Think positive coping statements…I can do this, I have done it before, work will be okay when I am not there.

Finally, if you can’t seem to get the worrying under control, consider talking to your doctor about antidepressant medication. There is a large biological component to anxiety and depression and sometimes, without medication, it is hard to turn the brain off.

Good luck. Things will get better with time. They always do.

Do people who suffer from anxiety and depression tend to be more intelligent?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

I know people who’ve had depression and/or anxiety and most of them seem to be very smart people. Conversely, most of the people I know who aren’t very intelligent tend not to suffer from mental illnesses. In fact, most of the ‘not very bright’ people I know tend to be the happiest people I know.
Is there a link between high IQ and anxiety/depression?

I’m not sure it has anything to do with cleverness I think it’s more to do with how sensitive people are but then again I can see where you are coming from because the more sensitive a person then more a person thinks and you have to think to be clever! :-)

These are somatoform disorders and can be tackled by cognitive behaviour therapy, even without medicines. But before embarking on any psychological therapy, physical ailment has to be ruled out by evaluation by a physician.

What is the difference between social anxiety disorder and avoidant personality disorder?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

They seem very similar to me.
I’m not sure which I have. I don’t mind talking one-on-one with people, but I get "stage fright" with groups of people.
I feel safe and secure with small talk, but I’m afraid of what it will become later on.

While both are similar, they vary in severity. Social Anxiety Disorder is general fear of being around people, while Avoidant Personality Disorder is fear of rejection or humiliation also.

When dealing with either, taking drugs is not a good way to solve your problem.
It is only temporary and doesn’t deal with the problem, only suppress it.
When the anxiety returns, you feel as horrible as you did before, maybe even worse.

Doctors constantly try to tell us we’re sick with something and often try to dismiss it by selling you drugs you don’t need to add more money to their wallet.

Don’t automatically diagnose yourself with something, you’ll only make yourself worry more.
Also remember that you’re not the only one stressing out, there are other people out there who may be even more stressed out than you about this subject, you might not even be able to tell!

In this day and age everyone is stressed out, with the media pressuring us all the time about problems in the world, going through school, or even going to work.

Talk to a friend you trust, or a family member, most should understand and try to reassure you.
Maybe all you need is someone to tell your worries to, that helps me a lot and sometimes they’ll open up about their stresses and you can reassure them as well.

Sometimes if you fear people or their opinion, just face them head on.
You might be surprised when people give you compliments or just want to be around you.
If someone says something negative, just brush it off and start again.
