Can anyone suggest a good solution for anxiety disorder?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I have suffered with anxiety for most of my life and have tried different medications with varying degrees of success. I’ve also tried drinking too much, which just makes things worse lol. What solutions have others found to anxiety disorder?

It can be a case of trial and error with the different medications that are available. Your doctor should keep monitoring you and suggest alternatives if you do not feel that what you are taking is working, don’t be afraid to ask to be referred to a specialist for CBT if you don’t feel that medication is the answer. There are changes to your diet and lifestyle such as cutting back on caffeine and alcohol that can make a big difference. Sometimes just by experiencing a drop in physical symptoms you can find yourself a platform to move forward.

You didn’t mention what type of anxiety disorder you are suffering with e.g. general, social or panic attacks. Has your doctor identified which group that your anxiety belongs to. There are a lot of good books and websites on the subject of anxiety. One I like is www.anxiety-disorder-solutions.com, and of course a wikipedia search can also turn out some useful info. I would suggest that you should read up on the condition so that you can feel more confident discussing it with your doctor.
Good luck

Social Anxiety #1: Introduction

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Hey everyone, my name is Mark. I’m 27 years old, from the UK and I have social phobia otherwise known as Social Anxiety Disorder. SAD is a fear of social situations and centres around the paranoid belief that people are being judgemental or overly critical of us. This makes the sufferer hermit like and stops them from living a normal happy lifestyle because they are constantly afraid that their actions may in some way embarrass them or cause them severe humiliation.

Have you ever had a panic attack or anxiety attacks before?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I’ve had a lot of "almost" panic/anxiety attacks, but never the real thing, my breath would shorten and my heart would race realy quick over the slightest thing I’m worried about. And I would get this nervous feeling like I’m not in control anymore.I used to be really calm, so idk what’s happening.

but have you ever had the real thing before and what does it feel like?

it felt like i couldnt breathe and like my heart was beating really fast. I felt like crying but i really didn’t know what was going on. My palms got sweaty and i had to go outside and sit down. Try yoga and relaxing more, stress can really be detrimental to your health.
good luck

does hypnotherapy help you get over social anxiety disorder?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

i have had social anxiety disorder for a few years and was wondering if hypnotherapy helps. i have been prescribed medication but would quite like to try and get over it with out that.

not really. CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is the best therapy having over 90% success rates. Together with the medication you should be able to function better or remove all symptoms of your Social Anxiety Disorder. Ask for a referral to a psychologist from your family doctor.

What is the difference between Asperger’s Syndrome and social phobia?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I have a lot of friends, but I sometimes feel lost and awkward in social situations when I am around people I have never seen before. If I have gotten used to being around certain people, I find that it is somewhat easy to socialize with them, however.

I am very introverted and I prefer to spend my time alone, but I am not exactly a loner.
I almost feel like I should never get married or have kids, because I don’t want to pass on a possible case of autism to my kids.

The short answer is that people with social phobias know how to socialize but get freaked out in social situations.

With Aspergers it is more ‘mind blindness’, where the individuals, are a lot of times incapable of carrying on conversations or engaging in casual small talk, or can’t comprehend even the most subtlest social cues.

Have you ever taken Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

My counselor is doing that with me now. Is it normal that I feel anxious & annoyed @ 1st? Fear of change & new adaptation. I know it’s good change, & it’s for the better. Supposed to help me. It’s very difficult for me to try to alter my thoughts, especially that with my OCD, I can’t control the thoughts.

I have had CBT for depression, anxiety and helping to manage my chronic pain. It’s a well studied type of therapy and can be very helpful.

It seems very simple and is in many ways. It can depend on how the therapist works it out with you and I believe that can sometimes affect how someone feels or responds to it but the biggest thing is how you feel.

It’s common to feel annoyed… sometimes that’s resistance to change… or feeling like there is no way this can really help me. I think it’s hard to have hope when you feel so out of control. OCD is like that… makes you feel so out of control and anxious but I notice one thing… you stated at the end.. ."I CAN"T control the thoughts"…. that’s true… to an extent.. but not completely. CBT can REALLY help you learn to have better control over your thoughts and how you respond to them. You might can’t stop them from coming but you can learn to deal with them and manage them but it does take work and effort and motivation on your part. It’s hard… and doing the homework.. it’s repetative to help it stick and to help your brain relearn to think differently.

I know it’s really tough sometimes but it’s good for you but first and foremost, you really need to feel the motivation to want to do it and feel hope that you can have help.

I feel like you should also tell your therapist that you feel annoyed right now! That’s normal and the more you tell your therapist, the better. SOmetimes they sense it. I know my therapist sensed my reluctance and resistance that I wasn’t even aware of early on but she was very in tune to me and not every therapist is like that. So the more you tell them, the better it is for you to work through these roadblocks.

Just know that CBT is an excellent type of therapy and that it is very useful for OCD and many other issues. Good fortune.
