how effective is exposure therapy in treating social anxiety?
Sunday, January 31st, 2010
Sigh since no one answered I might as well. I have read about this and yes it does work, and it is one of the major steps in recovering from social anxiety. However you have to do this with a therapist, or good guidance. If you do this by yourself and you have social anxiety, you will most likely fail. If you fail it will only serve to affirm your social anxiety beliefs.
Has anybody had hyper or hypothyroidism and suffered from anxiety or panic attacks?
Sunday, January 31st, 2010I just recently had blood drawn for a thyroid panel and I want to know if anybody who has suffered from hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism has experienced constant nervousness, anxiety, or panic attacks.
I want to hear from people that have experienced this first hand.
Hey Michelle, is there a way I can keep in contact with you?
Hyperthyroidism can cause the same symptoms as anxiety or panic attacks. That doesn’t mean that you have anxiety or panic attacks. Those are mental diseases. Hyperthyroidism is a physical disease, usually an autoimmune disease.
Hypothyroidism can not cause the symptoms of anxiety or a panic attack. Quite the opposite.
Anyone have information on Social Anxiety Disorder?
Sunday, January 31st, 2010I’m looking for any information on Social Anxiety Disorder or any help from people who suffer from it, or information on varying cures. Also, if anyone knows any good websites giving additional info or group support, please let me know.
Also, if anyone has experience with being put on benzodiazepines, information on the effectiveness and personal experiences with them would be extremely useful.
There is a huge amount of information available on the Web about Social Anxiety Disorder. Check out my previous "best answer" to a similar question:

Regarding the use of benzodiazepines, I do have personal experience and opinions about them. I believe them to be:
1. VERY effective in lowering anxiety, there are also known as tranquilizers.
2. Useful as a short-term measure and as a last resort if anxiety levels reach unbearable levels, or if sleep is not possible.
3. Highly addictive, and may do more harm than good long term if you
do not address the SA directly with therapy and/or SSRI’s.
In short, it is very easy and tempting to rely on tranquilizers, using them as a "crutch", and then never learning to "walk" with out them. Avoid their "regular" usage, you can, and if you must use them, be very careful…
Good luck on your healing journey. You CAN do it!
What benefits do pets have for people with depression, anxiety, etc?
Sunday, January 31st, 2010Do pets/animals have benefits for people with depression, anxiety, and stuff like that?
is there an actual study?
What is your personal opinion?
My opinion is that pets can help.
I believe that may be one of the reasons therapy dogs exist, to help with that.
Something about the presence of an animal calms people down.
That’s why dentists, doctors, etc often have fish in their offices, it helps keep people calm.
Dang, I read something about this, I read it a few years back and saw something on TV about it…
It think petting a dog was supposed to lower either your heart rate, your blood pressure, or something likewise.
Does the technology lead to social phobia?
Sunday, January 31st, 2010i want to know the major factors to develop social phobia and how the modern technology lead to it?
Social phobia has little to do with technology. I suffer from it and always have. It has to do with people and any type of social situation where you fear you might be judged or criticized by your every movement. I have it pretty severe. There is a biological factor. So in part in runs in my family. But I think certain technologies can add increased anxiousness like when using the phone. I have a very difficult time calling people, even for food. Technology can add to our difficulties but it is not a major factor in my opinion.
What are some Cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques?
Sunday, January 31st, 2010To help overcome nervousness, anxiety in social situations?
(I am going to a professional therapist about this, but the waiting list is 6 months to a year!!! I need some strategies now. Thanks!)
Hello Again Sue,
Go on to Google and type in the above heading , you will be amazed on what is available.
Just a thought are there any self help groups near you , if it’s about money you might find that you can get help in financing a private consultation, so that you can see some one in a week or two.
Sorry I can’t be of more help.
Is it true that if you suffer from Depression/Anxiety Disorders it can disqualify you from Graduate School?
Sunday, January 31st, 2010Is it true that if you suffer from Depression/Anxiety Disorders it can disqualify you from Graduate School?
I used to have bad anxiety and what your experiencing at the current moment, so I know what you a going through. I looked everywhere for a solution and I find one that the first time I tried I started to cry as it worked so well and I keep doing it whenever I get a anxiety attack, which has reduced by 95% because of this technique. So I want to try to help a few people overcome this. I want you to try this and email me back of how it went.
Next time your in a situation that your having a anxiety or panic attack I want you to stay where you are and observe what you are feeling, then I want you to speak to your anxiety in your mind and tell it to give you the worst anxiety attack it can give you, now your anxiety will reach a new peak but keep telling it to give you more and more and more, while staying where you are (stay no matter what because its only sensations within the body) and then at the peak of the anxiety attack it will pop like a baloon and the symtons will come down, because asnxiety has a peak. The reason you get anxiety is because you are dreading having one in the near future (leaving that place where you are while getting worse is a wrong thing to do as you are leaving while its in a upward trend with the feeling), therefore have that lingering feeling. When you REALISE that anxiety has a peak then starts to come down, you know that nothing happened to you exept sensations within the body.
Then you tell your anxiety that when it wants it can come back and you will be here, meaning you are not fearing it. The reason it comes back is because of the fear of having one. This is a POWERFUL succesfull thing which has changed my life and has reduced my anxiety by 95%. Let me know how you went.
