Stop Anxiety and Panic Attacks
How to Stop Anxiety and Panic Attacks
You can change the way you feel. I did.
My Story
I am not an overly shy person, but most of my friends would say I'm not really outgoing either. The first signs of my anxiety was when I first got out of college and got my first job. I was working for a software company doing customer support. I would answer client's questions on the phone and I found out pretty quickly that I had the right personality to be patient with people and walk them through their issues. I received a promotion within the first year and then I starting traveling and doing training and support on-site. This is when I first started to have issues.
I was basically doing the same thing that I had been doing over the phone, but now it was in person. It was usually with only one or two people so it was not like I was giving a speech in front of hundreds. What I felt when I was meeting with my clients was something I never had experienced before. I felt like I was turning beet red and I started to sweat and couldn't catch my breath. The more I tried to calm down, the worse it got. I know that my clients were staring at me thinking I was about to have a heart attack. The more I tried to block out this feeling, the worse it got.
During this time I was also experiencing similar issues when I was simply talking with someone face-to-face. I had never had issues like this before and I dreaded meeting with people. Even people that I knew really well.
This went on for several years. Sometimes it would get really bad, other times everything was OK. As I got older and moved around to other jobs, I began to realize that my actions were causing people to lack confidence in my ability. Even though I felt I knew what I was talking about and was confident in my abilities, I appeared to be nervous which caused doubt. I finally decided to spend some time trying to overcome my problem.
I started by researching the symptoms that I was having and quickly learned that I had anxiety. I researched anxiety and learned about the different types and levels of anxiety. The more I read the more I realized that anxiety was what was causing my problems. I even narrowed it down to a particular type of anxiety called "The Spotlight Fallacy". This is basically the fear of being in the spotlight or being the center of attention.
